  • The newspaper report of 1845 (refs) stated that he had "won all the prizes given by this [Edinburgh] university"
  • He is described in the Medical Times of 1849 as a Student in Human and Comparative Anatomy at the Royal College of Surgeons
  • The same article states he was "induced to take the appointment" with the whaling company to further his study of natural history and anatomy, and lists some of his publications in the field
  • He may not have been qualified to practice medicine: he does not mention a degree or diploma in his Sydney advertisements
  • He arrived in Sydney in 1851 with a child or young woman described in the shipping records as his "daughter" or "Miss Hallet"
  • According to Rykers this was his sister Hephzibah, who had attempted to shoot him on Auckland Island and then tried to kill herself (she married in Sydney in 1852 (Wikitree website))
