Notes:
|
Surgeon, politician, philanthropist
Beaney was born in the poorest parish in Canterbury and his father, a labourer, died when he was only two. He and his older brother, half sister and a young sister were brought up by the widowed mother
The Beaney Institute in Canterbury, England was established with money he left to endow an institute for working men (see other links)
A large amount of material is held in the MSV archive (see refs)
There are many references to him in the Australian Medical Journal particularly in the 1870s
ADB cites some useful references
Alan Barber of Canterbury, England, is compiling a pamphlet on Beaney inspired by the renovation of the Beaney Institute building. Alan is particularly looking for information about Beaney's Canterbury years and his private life -posted February 2009 |
